Senior Fitness Class Guidelines

🧭 Senior Fitness Class Guidelines

These guidelines are designed to help you create safe, effective, and enjoyable fitness experiences for our senior participants. While you have the freedom to teach in your own authentic style, please keep these 10 key principles in mind:

1. Know Your Audience 🧓🪑

Most residents you’ll be working with have limited mobility and many are wheelchair users. As a safety precaution, residents should remain seated throughout the class, and exercises should be 100% bodyweight—no equipment required.

That said, if a client specifically requests standing postures, use your best judgment. Consider the participants’ abilities carefully and prioritize fall prevention. If it seems unsafe for anyone, keep the class seated.

Key Reminders:

  • Use only verbal and visual cues—do not physically assist participants
  • Offer modifications to accommodate different ability levels
  • Encourage participants to go at their own pace and take breaks
  • On-site staff are responsible for any physical support or medical needs

2. Bring a Positive & Uplifting Energy 😊

Your attitude sets the tone! Be encouraging, warm, and enthusiastic. If the residents enjoy being around you, they’re more likely to engage consistently.

3. Keep It Simple, Fun & Energetic 🎭

  • Speak clearly and loudly (many residents are hard of hearing)
  • Incorporate imaginative movements (e.g., stirring soup, bowling, cleaning windows)
  • Offer multiple intensity levels so everyone can participate
  • Smile, laugh, and bring joy and humor to each session

4. Play Great Music 🎶

Music adds energy and emotional connection to your class! Bring a Bluetooth speaker and play tunes your audience will love. Great choices include:

  • 🎷 Golden Oldies
  • 🎤 Frank Sinatra & Celine Dion
  • 🧘 Soothing instrumental yoga music
  • 💃 Latin dance rhythms

You can find class-friendly playlists here:

Feel free to use your own curated playlists, ensuring the music is age-appropriate, uplifting, and played at a reasonable volume so your voice remains clear. Please also make sure your music is free of ads or interruptions!

5. Be Professional 👕

  • Wear clean, athletic attire appropriate for fitness instruction
  • Maintain professional communication with clients and staff
  • Respect the environment and the people you work with—the client is always right

6. Start & End On Time ⏰

Being 5 minutes early is considered being on time. Respect everyone’s schedule and begin promptly.

8. Be Versatile & Adapt to Changes 🔄

You should be prepared to teach at least two of the following class types:

  • Yoga
  • Exercise
  • Zumba/Dance
  • Tai Chi

The only thing predictable in life is its unpredictability — please improvise, adapt, and overcome as needed. Stay flexible and be ready to accommodate changes as they arise to ensure the best experience for your participants.

9. Memorize Your Routine 🧠
